IVANOVIC: EARLY DAYS

Having helped get our Barclays Premier League season off to the perfect start, Branislav Ivanovic insists we must develop a consistency that evaded us last time around.

Few would have had Ivanovic down to score our first league goal of the season, including the defender himself, but after latching onto Eden Hazard’s through-ball, he made no mistake from inside the penalty area, firing hard and low past Wigan’s Ali Al Habsi.

‘I think the goalkeeper expected me to pass the ball for Fernando who was next to me, I saw this and just tried to shoot instead,’ said the 28-year-old.

‘It was a very difficult game for us, we opened the game well with the two goals and tried to keep the ball and do things to make life easy for us. We are happy with the three points, it’s great to start the season well but it’s just the start and we expect some very tough games.

‘Wigan played very well at the end of last season. For us it is always very difficult to play against Wigan.

‘Now it is too early to say something about our ambition. We have to go game by game. This was the first away game, it’s nice to start well but we have to work hard and be on this level all season.’

Having been sent off in last weekend’s Community Shield defeat against Manchester City, Ivanovic enjoyed a complete reversal in fortunes. Afterwards, the Serbian admitted he felt fortunate to be playing, thanks to a change in disciplinary rules.

‘The guys from the club told me I was allowed to play which gave me a little extra motivation, to try to play my best,’ the defender said.

He will be in action again on Wednesday night as we play our first home game of the season against Reading, who have returned to the top flight after four seasons away.

The Royals earned a 1-1 home draw with Stoke on Saturday thanks to Adam Le Fondre’s last-minute penalty.

Ivanovic also spoke to Chelsea TV after Sunday’s win, and you can see a clip of the interview¬†above. The full interview is available on Chelsea TV now.
