Petr Cech was pleased to see us into the last eight of the Europa League on Thursday night, after a tricky tie against Steaua Bucharest.
Trailing by a goal following the first leg in Romania a week earlier, Cech made an important early save to keep last night’s game goalless, before goals from Juan Mata, and then John Terry and Fernando Torres in the second half, with a Steaua reply on the stroke of half-time, sending us through to the quarter-finals.
‘It’s a big win. We wanted to qualify for the next round,’ Cech said afterwards. ‘We made it hard for ourselves because we lost 1-0 away in Bucharest and you could see the away goal makes the difference. We didn’t score one and when they did we knew we would have to score twice but at the weekend we managed to turn around a 2-0 deficit at Old Trafford, and we believed we would get the goals.
‘We’re in the stage where every game is a final because we’re chasing third spot in the league, and the Europa League and the FA Cup. We’re playing a lot of games so we go step by step and you can see it isn’t easy at times but we keep fighting.’
Cech had praise for Torres, who scored for the first time since January but later missed a penalty.
‘Fernando was working hard and took his chance well, which was brilliant,’ the goalkeeper said. ‘It’s a pity the penalty didn’t go in for him but the main point was we scored the three goals we needed and we’re through.’
The draw for the quarter-finals, and semi-finals, takes place this morning. You can catch all the latest news here on the official Chelsea website and with Chelsea Mobile.
