Frank Lampard made history earlier today [Saturday] by becoming the club’s all-time highest goalscorer.
Everybody at Chelsea Football Club would like to offer Frank our congratulations for a truly magnificent achievement.
The midfielder scored both goals in our 2-1 win at Aston Villa to reach the 203-mark, surpassing the previous record of 202 which was held by Bobby Tambling.
Lampard equalled the record midway through the second half, collecting the ball inside the Villa penalty area and crashing a powerful left-footed strike beyond the despairing dive of Brad Guzan.
With seven minutes left to play, and with the game heading for a draw, the Blues midfielder won us the match.
Eden Hazard exchanged passes with Ashley Cole before laying it into the path of Lampard, who had timed his run to perfection, ensuring the simplest of finishes.
As he reflected on a wonderful achievement, Lampard was understandably very emotional.
‘It means everything, it’s amazing,’ he said. ‘The support I’ve had from team-mates, you saw that at the end and I’m thankful to every one of them because they’re the ones that put it on a plate for me sometimes.
‘And the fans, they’ve been with me for a long time and were probably frustrated alongside me not getting there, so I’m just delighted.’
He went on to pay tribute to the man who held the record for so many years.
‘Bobby Tambling is a great man, he’s not been well lately but he’s a great man,’ Lampard explained.
‘I was pleased to level it but I didn’t want to overcook that celebration out of respect for him. But to then go and break it, I was delighted.
‘I’ve been here a long time, I lost my mum a few years ago and she was my biggest supporter so it’s for her.
‘It’s right up there. Not much beats Munich because that was amazing for the team and the club but personally it’s another great day.’
Tambling paid tribute to Lampard by saying: ‘I am so proud to have held the leading goalscoring record with Chelsea for the past 45 years and I know like all records, it is there to be broken. But to be honest, if I wanted anyone to break it, it would be Frank Lampard.
‘I have been privileged to meet him on numerous occasions and he has always been a true gent and an absolute gem to both myself and Val.
‘He is a thorough professional both on and off the pitch and has brought such success to Chelsea, he will be a very worthy member of the exclusive 200 Club! Wishing him and all the team the very best for the remainder of the season.’
