EUROPEAN DELIGHT FOR SOLANKE AND BROWN

Chelsea duo Dominic Solanke and Isaiah Brown experienced joy on the international stage as England won the Under-17 European Championships in dramatic fashion.

After the final against Netherlands had ended 1-1, the match, which was held in Malta, was decided by a penalty shoot-out, with England winning 4-1.

The achievement caps a remarkable few weeks for the pair, who were also part of the Chelsea Under-18 team which lifted the FA Youth Cup.

Both players completed the full 80 minutes, and Brown had gone close very early on when his low drive was well saved by Netherlands goalkeeper Yanick van Osch.

Solanke continued his impressive run of form by giving the Three Lions the lead after 25 minutes when he reacted quickest to divert a Taylor Moore shot into the back of the net, the 16-year-old’s fourth goal in the competition.

Netherlands drew level just before the break, however, when Jari Schuurman’s strike deflected off the leg of defender Joe Gomez and crept in at the near post.

There was little to choose between the sides during the second half, although Netherlands were certainly seeing more of the ball.

Chances were passed up at both ends, with Ryan Ledson going close for England after being teed up by Brown, but with no extra-time being played, the destination of the trophy would be decided by penalties, and it was England who came out on top.

Ledson, Moore, Callum Cooke and Jonjoe Kenny all tucked their kicks away, with only Schuurman scoring for Netherlands.

There were jubilant scenes among the England players as captain Ledson lifted the trophy and, in truth, it was no more than John Peacock’s side deserved following an impressive campaign.

They emulate the England team of 2010 who also won the competition.

Meanwhile, two other Chelsea players have been involved in internationals across the younger age groups over the course of the past week.

Last Wednesday, Milan Lalkovic played the second half as Slovakia Under-21s beat Czech Republic 3-1.

Elsewhere, Charly Musonda opened the scoring for Belgium Under-19s last night as they drew 1-1 with Mexico.
