This summer’s transfer window seems to be working in Chelsea’s favour with an offer to sign on Atletico Madrid’s attacking midfielder, Arda Turan. Recent media reports have revealed that the two clubs are working on a transfer deal that will enable Arda Turan to come to over to Chelsea while the Blues left-back Filipe Luis goes over to Atletico Madrid.
Turan’s agent, Ahmet Bulut has said that the Turkish international wants to to leave the La Liga and go to England next season. Turan has been in great form with a sterling performance in the last two seasons at Atletico Madrid. In the 2013/14 season, he helped his team to win the league title and to get to the finals of the UEFA Champions League final which they lost to local rivals Real Madrid. This season, he continued his top performance, scoring three goals and making six assists.
Turan should be able to fit easily into the Chelsea side with his speed, good attacking skills, and ability to maintain a keen contest for the ball in the midfield. Hopefully, he will perform to the expectations of the Chelsea fans who will be trooping to Stamford bridge every week to cheer their club to retain the league title and possible grab another piece of silverware on the continental scene.
Up till now, there is no official pronouncement on this move and no one is really sure whether Chelsea will be willing to pursue this move to its logical conclusion. It appears that Atletico are trying to use the former Galatasaray player as a bait to enable them get back Filipe Luis who joined Chelsea last season.
According to the Sun, the Spanish club wants to have Luis back just after one year, but they will not be able to afford the huge sign up fees for the 29 year old Turkish player unless they give one of their players in exchange for him. Since Turan has stated his intention to leave the club for England, they have decided to use this an opportunity to get Luis back.
A report in London Evening Standard stated that Chelsea may be considering the 20 year old Augsburg Ghanaian international, Baba Rahman, as a replacement for Luis at the left back position. The Ghanaian is expected to take over from Luis if the exchange eventually sails through.
However, other top European clubs like Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in Arda Turan. So it is not clear whether Turan will be the one who will be exchanged for Luis since PSG have shown strong interest in signing him on. But with the strong statement made by the bearded player’s manager, Ahmet Bulut, Turan is more interested in continuing his football career in the English Premiership.
Hence, if Turan moves over to Chelsea this summer, his transfer may not be the only player exchange deal between Atletico Madrid and Chelsea this year. From all indications, Antonie Griezmann is also in the process of moving to the English Premiership for an undisclosed fee while the Spanish giants have also expressed strong interest in signing up Chelsea’s Egyptian international, Mohamed Salah.
