Back in the starting line-up on Tuesday night, Frank Lampard enjoyed a hard-fought victory against a side he admitted caused us problems.
After stating strongly in Copenhagen, we allowed FC Nordsjaelland back into the contest and were arguably fortunate to still be in front before three late goals put the game beyond doubt.
For Lampard, it was a first start since our previous Champions League game against Juventus, but after captaining the side last night the 34-year-old insists he is happy with his role.
‘It was a tough game in the end, we knew they played very good football and had to put the hard work in,’ he said.
‘We were a little bit concerned because it’s Champions League football, they had a couple of half-chances and hit the post in the second half, but once the second goal went in we were comfortable.
‘I’m very happy with the start to the season. I’m in a team playing very well, we’re top of the league and we’ve a fantastic spirit.’
Inevitably questions were asked about whether the new-look Chelsea can become the first team to defend the Champions League crown. Acknowledging the size of the task, Lampard believes all is possible.
‘It’s a huge ask to retain it, but we’ve got confidence from last year, we’ve adapted our style a little bit, and it’s a long competition,’ he said. ‘We have to qualify first and then regroup for the knockout stages. We believe at the minute but we will have to keep working hard to get there.’
One of the new faces made his European debut in Copenhagen, and Victor Moses impressed before being replaced by Eden Hazard shortly after the hour. The former Wigan man believes he must offer more, however.
‘I enjoyed it very much, my first Champions League game,’ he commented. ‘It was different and is something I will have to get used to. It wasn’t my best game but the most important thing was we won.
‘We went 1-0 up but they hit the post in the second half, but when we got the second goal they sat back off us and we kept on going, which is what we are good at.
‘I’ve enjoyed my time here so far and feel like I’ve settled well, people are looking after me and I just want to keep on working hard.’
Both Lampard and Moses will be hoping to keep their places when Norwich City visit Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.
