MATA AND DAVID LUIZ: DANES MADE IT DIFFICULT

Double goalscorer Juan Mata felt we deserved victory in Denmark last night, even if the 4-0 scoreline eventually flattered us.

The Spaniard struck either side of David Luiz’s free-kick before Ramires added a fourth goal late on, sending us top of Champions League Group E thanks to Shakhtar Donetsk’s 1-1 draw with Juventus.

It could have been a different outcome, however, with our hosts FC Nordsjaelland striking the woodwork in the second period and enjoying long spells of possession.

‘It was nice to score and to get this result. We are now on top of the group which is what we are aiming for,’ Mata said afterwards.

‘It makes up for the Juventus game. This game was very difficult for us, but we go back to London with a very important three points.

‘After seeing the ball possession, to win 4-0 is harsh. They played well on the ball and had some quality players. It wasn’t as easy as 4-0 sounds and they had a good opportunity to score at 1-0.

‘Nordsjaelland have very good players in the midfield and play it short from their goalkeeper, so I liked their style and appreciate their efforts.’

It was a view shared by David Luiz, who alongside Gary Cahill in the heart of defence enjoyed some busy moments dealing with Nordsjaelland attacks.

‘Their philosophy is fantastic, and they have a great coach,’ the Brazilian said. ‘To play there was difficult, so I am happy that we won three points and are top of the group.’

The defender also spoke briefly on his superbly struck goal, saying: ‘I always train hard with the free-kicks and today was a great goal and helped the team.’
