We travel to the home of the Barclays Premier League champions on Sunday knowing a win will bring us to within a point of second place in the table.

Having lifted the trophy for the first time back in May, Manchester City have this season struggled to keep pace with leaders Man United, who could be 15 points clear at the top by the time we kick off at the Etihad Stadium.

Indifferent form of late has seen City drop points in their last three league outings against QPR, Liverpool and Southampton, allowing us to make ground as we look to secure Champions League football next season.

David Luiz, who scored against City in only his fifth Chelsea appearance two years ago, believes a win could give us some important momentum as we enter the final third of the campaign.

‘It will be a great game,’ the Brazilian said. ‘It’s a difficult game because we play away against a great team, but we have the opportunity to get closer in the table.

‘In big games and derbies you cannot predict what will happen, or the score, but you work hard every day to be fit and strong for these games. We have the opportunity to be closer to them and we go there wanting to win the game. We need three points from the game, so let’s go.’

Of course the defender is under no illusions, Man City’s only home defeat this season came against Man United, but there is a confidence in the Chelsea camp after a run of positive results. David Luiz has also highlighted the Argentine trio of Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero and Pablo Zabaleta as ones to watch, but insists there is no special rivalry despite their conflicting nationalities.

‘I have a great relationship with the three Argentine players,’ said the 25-year-old. ‘I respect them on the pitch, because they are three great guys with great hearts.

‘Wherever I play on the pitch I have to be alert in this game, because Tevez, Aguero, these are two big players in world football, so we need to concentrate from the start until the end.

‘Of course I know Maicon too who is Brazilian, he is my friend and I speak with him a lot. He didn’t have a lot of opportunities to play because Zabaleta did so well this season. I don’t know if Pablo is the best defender in the league, but he is surely in the top three and loves to attack. So Maicon didn’t play a lot, but he is a great player, a champion of Europe who has played many games at a high level. Everybody knows him.’
