England manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed Gary Cahill will play no part in England’s World Cup qualifier against Montenegro.

The Chelsea defender had already been ruled out of Friday’s game against San Marino after sustaining a knee injury during last Sunday’s 2-0 win against West Ham United, and having been further assessed, it became clear Cahill would be unable to participate in next Tuesday’s match.

‘We learnt today that Gary Cahill, who we were leaving the door ajar for, won’t be able to join us,’ said Hodgson.

‘It’s not a great surprise because the doctor did warn me there was a more of a chance that he wouldn’t be able to [join us] than he would.’
