The odds are against Nigeria making the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup after they were beaten by Uruguay in their second group game.

John Mikel Obi and Kenneth Omeruo played the whole match again and after Malaga’s Diego Lugano gave the South Americans the lead with a scrappy goal, it was Mikel who levelled before the interval.

He outmanoeuvred Lugano on the edge of the area and shot high into the net with his left foot for his fourth international goal on his 50th appearance. Nigeria were improving but five minutes after the break, Diego Forlan rifled in the winner on the occasion of his 100th cap.

Edinson Cavani missed chances to extend their lead but the single-goal margin proved enough. Nigeria and Uruguay both have three points, but while Uruguay play Tahiti on Sunday, Nigeria face Spain who have six points to their name.
