Professional footballers have spent the majority of their lives focused on mastering their art but, away from the beautiful game, which other sports do they take an interest in?
The official Chelsea website continues to survey the squad to get a brief insight into their other sporting passions…
‘Basketball is my favourite other sport, and the New York Knicks are my team.
‘I went to see them about three years ago against the Denver Nuggets, and they won. My favourite player is probably not one of theirs though… I would say Kevin Garnett, who is a Chelsea fan and his trainers are in the club museum.
‘I know Kobe Bryant was at Chelsea before and some of the guys met him, he is the best.’
Kevin Garnett currently plays for the Boston Celtics in the NBA, a team he has represented since 2007, when he made the switch from the Minnesota Timberwolves.
While at the Timberwolves he led them to eight consecutive play-off appearances and in 2004 he won the NBA’s Most Valuable Player award. In Garnett’s first season with the Celtics he played a pivotal role as they won their first NBA title since 1986.
‘My favourite other sport is golf. I don’t get to play that often but have had a few rounds with some of the other lads. I think if I played more often I could be a lot better.
‘I don’t watch much of it on TV or know any players, but it’s a good way to relax away from football.’
Golf is traditionally a popular choice of sport for footballers and it is reported that former Fulham midfielder Jimmy Bullard is in the process of attempting to turn professional, while former West Ham United left-back Julian Dicks made the transition from football to golf before being forced into retirement with a knee injury.
