Gary Cahill was among four Chelsea players to complete 90 minutes against Real Madrid on Wednesday night, and despite the result was pleased with the workout.
The defender, alongside Branislav Ivanovic, Ashley Cole and Petr Cech played all of our 3-1 defeat, adding valuable pre-season minutes ahead of Saturday’s final friendly of the summer against Roma.
Jose Mourinho stated it is unlikely those who played the full match tonight will figure in Washington DC, and so Cahill was pleased to have another full game under his belt, his third of pre-season.
‘I feel good after another 90 minutes,’ the 27-year-old said. ‘This third game was a bit tougher than the previous two in America in Indianapolis and New York, the conditions were hotter down in Miami and we travelled a longer distance to the game. We’re not making any excuses, but it was tougher on the legs. In general though, I feel fit and ready for the season.’
Marcelo put the Spaniards ahead early on before Ramires equalised, only for Cristiano Ronaldo to add a brace to put the game beyond us.
‘They gave us a really tough game, and sometimes you have to say on the day they were better than us,’ admitted Cahill. ‘On another day we might have been better but on the night they were the better side.
‘It’s still pre-season, we’ve trained hard this week and we’ve travelled a long way, preparation isn’t the same as playing each other in Europe. They’re a very good side though and the better team won on the day for sure.’
The squad returned to its base in Washington DC following the game in Florida, with a two-hour flight ensuring arrival early on Thursday morning. There are now just two more days of work before we meet Roma.
