Nathaniel Chalobah was a social media star on Monday after scoring a fine individual goal in training before the eyes of England manager Roy Hodgson.

Chalobah, 18, who joins Chelsea team-mate Todd Kane in the Under-21 squad that meets Scotland in Sheffield tonight, scored an impressive goal, beating two men before chipping goalkeeper Jack Butland, an effort caught on camera by the FA’s TV channel, and subsequently shared around the world on Twitter.

‘It is always good to impress the senior manager,’ he said, with Hodgson taking charge of the game following Stuart Pearce’s exit from the Under-21 coach’s position.

‘At this moment in time, to play for England is always going to be difficult because there are world-class players out there playing every week in the Premier League and representing their country, but I think really what we have to do right now is focus on trying to gel together as a group, because we have qualifiers coming up.

‘The target is to try to get into the senior team and it is always good to get in the manager’s good books, but right now we have to concentrate on working together as a team and building.’
