We have been drawn with Schalke, FC Basel and Steaua Bucharest in Group E of the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League.
The first round of games will take place on either Tuesday or Wednesday of the week commencing September 16, with full details of fixtures and ticket news to follow.
Schalke, the second seeds, finished fourth in Germany last season and came past Greek side PAOK in the play-offs to reach the group stages.
We met the Gelsenkirchen side, now coached by Jens Keller, at the same stage back in 2007 on our way to Moscow, earning a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge before a 0-0 draw away from home. They were quarter-finalists that season, and went one better in 2011, but were eliminated in last year’s round of 16.
FC Basel, third seeds, and Steaua Bucharest, fourth seeds, were both beaten en route to Amsterdam in last season’s Europa League.
Basel, the Swiss champions, were opponents in the semi-final, when David Luiz’s late free-kick earned us a win in Switzerland before scoring another in our 3-1 home victory at Stamford Bridge. They entered the Europa League after exiting the Champions League at the play-off stage last term, having qualified for the knockout rounds after seeing off Manchester United a year earlier.
Steaua, the Romanian champions, beat us 1-0 in Bucharest last season before a 3-1 home win sent us through. In this season’s Champions League, they have already come past Vardar, Dinamo Tbilisi and Legia Warsaw to reach the group stages, for their first involvement since 2008/09.
