The win on Saturday against Arsenal maintained Chelsea as the team with the best record from games between the sides currently occupying the top seven places in the league table (see mini-league table below).
The 6-0 defeat of the Gunners is up there with the win away to Manchester City and the home victory over Liverpool when the best performance of the season is considered, and added to the 4-0 success over Tottenham in our previous London derby, there is no doubt the Blues have been able to produce in the big games this campaign.
Andre Schurrle, speaking after the Arsenal match, gave an insight into the team mental leading up to Saturday.
‘We are really focused, we enjoy the big games and the manager, looking forward to all the big games, motivates us,’ said the German international who scored his seventh Chelsea goal early in the match.
‘We wanted to start strong, we wanted to press and we did this really well. We had a lot of ball in the beginning and we scored two early goals.
‘We knew that their full-backs are very offensive and when Arsenal lose the ball there is a lot of space and we wanted to use it, and we had a lot of very good transitions.
‘The 4-0 at half-time was really good. In the second half we played well and it was a super, super game for us.
‘We didn’t expect 6-0 of course but we wanted to stay strong and play well, and 6-0 is great for the fans in this very important match.
‘We were so focused ahead of the game and that is what happens when you are 100 per cent concentrated.’
Schurrle believes the way the previous league game, away at Aston Villa, panned out added to the determination.
‘We were really angry after that match because it was a bad game but one we could have won. Maybe it was the start of being strong in the last games [of the season]. That would be good but every game is difficult and we have to keep focused on every single game and if we win them we will see.
‘When you want to be champions you have to win every match, not only against the top teams. Of course playing Liverpool away is very difficult but we can do it so we have to keep focused. Next week is Crystal Palace away, so another London derby we have to win and that is what we think about.
‘If Man City win every match they are champions but we can win every match and we want to win every match and if we do this we have a good chance, but we have to focus on each game and we will see how we stand at the end.’
