David Luiz Named as Surprise Contender to Take Over Chelsea Captain’s Armband From John Terry

David Luiz could be set to replace Blues legend John Terry as Chelsea’s club captain, usurping heir-apparent Gary Cahill.

The 30-year-old has become an increasingly popular character at Chelsea, with his character, passion and commitment to the game admired by both fans and teammates, which the ?Sun report has earned him a chance at the captaincy.

The Brazilian defender has enjoyed a lot of success at the west London club, including winning a Premier League title, the FA Cup, the Champions League and the Europa League.

Last season, he became an integral part of the Chelsea defence and a popular character at Stamford Bridge, something that was evident when he was brought back to the club in 2016 having made a move to Paris Saint-Germain two years prior.

With Terry’s move to Aston Villa complete, Chelsea will no doubt need to fill the hole he left as a vocal and spirited leader as soon as possible.

Having been seen as a bit of an accident waiting to happen in his first spell at Chelsea, Luiz has certainly matured as a footballer. He has been praised on many occasions for his impressive work-rate, physicality, technique and distribution.

Luiz will not be the only option for Antonio Conte however, with Cahill being another prime contender due to his experience at the club and with the armband, having filled in for much of the past two seasons.

Despite this, it’s thought that Conte favours Luiz over Cahill, mainly due to his leadership qualities and, most importantly, his vocal instincts and communication to his teammates during big matches.

With Luiz appearing to be the front runner for the armband, it’ll be interesting to see how Conte lines his Chelsea side up during their pre-season tour of the United States.
