4 Things You Should Know About New Chelsea Signing Emerson Palmieri

Chelsea have completed the signing of 23-year-old left-back Emerson Palmieri; the Italian signed from Roma for a fee in the region of £18m.

He has been brought in by Antonio Conte to provide some much needed cover for Chelsea on the left side of defence and will provide some competition for the in-form Marcus Alonso.

Here are 4 things to know about Chelsea’s latest signing:

4. He Graduated Through the Same Youth Academy as Neymar

Emerson was born in Santos, Sau Paulo, and joined the Santos youth set up in 2009. He spent six years with the club and played alongside Neymar during his time there.

Chelsea fans will be hoping that Emerson picked up a thing or two from the world’s most expensive player.

3. He Changed His National Allegiance to Italian in 2017

Despite being born and raised in Brazil, Emerson was granted an Italian citizenship in 2017. He had previously represented Brazil at youth level winning the U17 South American Football Championships in 2011.

However, after being granted the citizenship after living in Italy for three years, Emerson switched his allegiance to Italy and is now vying for the starting left-back spot with Domenico Criscito and Matteo Darmian.

2. His Brother is Also a Professional Footballer

Emerson is not the only football player with the Palmieri name. It appears football runs in his family, with his older brother Giovanni playing in Brazil for Fluminese.

Five years older at the age of 28, Emerson’s brother also operates as a left-back and has racked up almost 100 appearances with the Brazilian club.

1. He is Yet to Make an International Appearance

With 47 appearances for Roma under his belt and after impressing in the 2016/17 season, Emerson earned himself his first call up to the Italy national team.

This was a landmark moment for the full-back, but unfortunately he sustained cruciate ligament damage and was unable to join up with the Italy squad and is still yet to appear for the Azzurri.

Emerson and Chelsea fans alike will be hoping Emerson’s recent injury problems do not hamper his progress, and that he will earn an international call-up in the near future.
