Mateo Kovacic Confident Chelsea Boss Frank Lampard Can Help Him Add Goals to His Game

Mateo Kovacic has backed Chelsea boss Frank Lampard to help him score more goals at Stamford Bridge.

Kovacic has gone from strength to strength during his time at Chelsea, establishing himself as a consistent starter and a direct, physical presence in central midfield. However, one area in which the 26-year-old is lacking is the goals department.

In 88 appearances for the Blues, Kovacic has scored just twice – both of which have come this season – but the Croatian midfielder feels confident that Lampard can help him improve his tally in front of goal.

Speaking in an Instagram Live chat, Kovacic stated: “We had a quite good year under Maurizio Sarri, winning the Europa League, in the end he left and Frank Lampard came to the team.

“I think from the first moment our feeling was good. I liked the way he was training us, really hard training, I liked his character, how he was speaking to the team. I think I can learn a lot from him because all the things I am missing from my game – scoring goals and being more direct, this is the thing Lampard was amazing at in his career.

“So he’s a great manager, a great person and I think I can learn a lot from him during my time here.”

Lampard himself scored 211 goals during his Chelsea days and was the perfect example of a well-rounded, box-to-box midfielder. Assuming he can pass some of his wisdom onto Kovacic, then the sky truly is the limit for the former Real Madrid man.

Chelsea FC v Newcastle United – Premier League

Kovacic has arguably been Chelsea’s best player this season and is one of the many talented individuals who is thriving under Lampard’s tutelage. The Croatia international will be eager for the Premier League season to get back underway following a break of over two months, especially given the Blues are closing in on a definite return to the Champions League next season.
