Chelsea have been made aware that Ajax defender Nicolas Tagliafico is available for a cut-price fee this summer, with the Dutch side prepared to let him leave to scupper up extra finances.
Chelsea have been linked with a number of potential left back targets ahead of this summer’s transfer window, and have already agreed a deal with Ajax to purchase winger Hakim Ziyech ahead of next season.
Tagliafico was linked with a move to the Premier League last summer, after impressing in the Dutch capital. According to the Telegraph, Ajax have put a bargain £22m price tag on Tagliafico ahead of the transfer window, and are prepared to sell the 27-year-old if a suitable offer is made.
It is believed that the Argentine has an agreement with Ajax, who say they won’t stand in the way of any potential transfer after he decided to stay with them for another 12 months last summer.
The bargain price tag has alerted Chelsea, who are keen to recruit a replacement for Marcos Alonso this summer. They had previously been linked with Leicester’s Ben Chilwell, but with Tagliafico available for just over £20m, the Blues could opt for the more economic deal.
While Ajax are a club steeped in history, they often find themselves quickly selling on their brightest talents to Europe’s top football leagues, as soon as they gain any momentum.
With Chelsea already agreeing the deal for Ziyech in February, there are good relations between themselves and Ajax. Thus, completing a deal for the Argentine left back could be more straight forward than any other potential options.
Tagliafico, an Argentina international, has quickly become a key player at Ajax since signing in January 2018. He reached the Champions League semi final in 2019 and has continued that form into this season. He managed five goals and seven assists in all competitions, before Dutch football was voided due to the coronavirus pandemic.
It remains to be seen how the pandemic will affect the transfer window, but with a small price tag, clubs will be eager to secure Tagliafico’s services quickly.
