“Kai has been with us for 10 years. I see the player’s desire to take the next step sometime in the near future. You have to respect that as much as the fact that he has a contract in Leverkusen until 2022,” Carro tellingly admitted.

A number of clubs have been linked with Havertz at various times over recent months, including Manchester United, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

But the strongest interest of genuine substance appears to have been from Chelsea and Bild reporter Christian Falk now suggests that Havertz will specifically ask Leverkusen to sell him to Chelsea ahead of next season.

The Stamford Bridge club have already invested around £90m on the captures of Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner for 2020/21 and remain interested in also signing a new left-back and centre-back in addition to Havertz as a squad rebuild continues.

While Chelsea have raised a considerable amount of money through players sales over the last 12 months, it is thought that the club is willing to cash in on certain existing players in order to fund further spending. Jorginho is linked with Juventus and a reunion with former coach Maurizio Sarri, while, alternatively, an acceptable offer could see N’Golo Kante move on.
