Having controlled much of the first period, the game turned on its head in first-half stoppage time when James conceded a penalty for a handball on the goal-line as he attempted to clear the ball. Following a VAR review, a spot-kick was awarded and the England defender swiftly dismissed.

That meant the Blues had to play for 45 minutes with a man down but out effort in the second period was phenomenal, with Edou Mendy making a string of impressive saves behind a resilient rearguard effort.
