PSG Join Chelsea in Reported Managerial Chase for Former Barcelona Boss Luis Enrique

Former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique is quite the wanted man, if recent reports are to be believed.

The Spaniard, who led the Catalan outfit to two league titles, three Copas del Rey and a Champions League trophy, is now understood to be Chelsea’s chief managerial target for next season, following the tension between the board and Antonio Conte.

The Italian won the Premier League title with the Blues on the first time of asking, but in his second season in charge, he has been made to clash with persons within the club’s hierarchy on numerous occasions over transfer business.

Results haven’t been all that good either, with the Londoners in danger of missing out on Champions League qualification. But they recorded a win in their last Premier League match, also claiming an impressive draw after playing Barcelona on Tuesday night.

Conte has repeatedly stressed his desire to see out his contract, which expires next year. Yet Roman Abramovic will have no qualms swinging the axe if results don’t go his way.

The Blues are still alive in the Champions League and FA Cup, and could possibly finish second in the top flight. However, only time will tell.

According to ?Sport, they now have added competition in their chase for Conte’s replacement. Enrique has become a target for French giants Paris Saint-Germain as well, with the Ligue 1 side looking to get rid of Unai Emery following the disastrous performance against Real Madrid which leaves them in a precarious position in the Champions League.

After doing some serious team building in the summer, PSG are on the verge of exiting the Champions League in the first phase of the knockout round.

They are now seriously considering sacking Emery, and the former Barca boss supposedly being spotted on a Qatar Airways flight to Doha, where PSG chief Nasser Al-Khelaifi resides, has certainly set tongues wagging.

Chelsea Eye Newcastle Star Man as They Look to Bolster Their Defensive Options

?Chelsea are reportedly interested in acquiring the services of Newcastle skipper Jamaal Lascelles at the end of the season, as they look to bolster their options in the centre of defence. Any potential move however, may depend on the future of Magpies’ boss Rafa Benitez.

According to the ??Evening Standard, the 24-year-old has emerged as a target for Blues’ boss Antonio Conte as a result of Gary Cahill and David Luiz’s indifferent form for the majority of the current campaign. The club were also said to looking to secure a younger option given the aforementioned duo’s increasing age.

Lascelles – formerly of Nottingham Forest – only recently signed a new six-year contract at St James’ Park worth in the region of £50k per week, a figure that Chelsea would most certainly be expected to better should they be allowed to negotiate with the 24-year-old.

Benitez himself is reportedly unhappy at Newcastle as a result of Mike Ashley’s stranglehold on transfer dealings, as well as a lack of budget afforded to him in recent windows.

If the Spaniard decides to walk at the end of the season, Lascelles may jump ship as well; especially if the newly promoted side fail to survive their first season back in the top flight.

Chelsea Captain Gary Cahill’s World Cup Hopes in Doubt After Inconsistent Season With Blues

?A report has claimed that Chelsea captain Gary Cahill is in danger of missing out on a place in England’s World Cup squad, after his dismal form for the Blues has left his chances of representing the Three Lions in Russia this summer in doubt.

As claimed by the Times, England manager Gareth Southgate has become worried by the former Bolton Wanderers man’s form for the Premier League champions this season – with a wealth of errors on the field causing Antonio Conte’s side to give away precious points. Tellingly, Cahill was left out of the Chelsea side who drew 1-1 with Barcelona on Tuesday in the Champions League.

However, it is worth noting that the two-time Premier League champion has started all of the seven matches of Southgate’s England reign so far, and also captained the Three Lions in their last friendly match against Germany. Now aged 32, the next World Cup is surely Cahill’s last opportunity of achieving glory on the international stage.

A host of less experienced options could be tested by Southgate in England’s build-up to the World Cup – when his side face the likes of the Netherlands, Italy and Nigeria in friendly matches. Burnley duo James Tarkowski and Ben Mee both thought to be on England’s radar, alongside the likes of Brighton’s robust centre-back Lewis Dunk and Everton’s Michael Keane.

Cahill’s defensive errors have proved costly on numerous occasions for Chelsea this season – and his wayward performances in the Blues’ shocking recent losses to Watford and Bournemouth in the Premier League appear to have been the last straw for Conte, who appears to now be favouring youngster Andreas Christensen as his replacement.

In other news, ?Blues talisman Eden Hazard has been reported to have aimed a veiled complaint at Conte, after claiming that he struggled in the ‘false nine’ position against Barcelona. The Belgian ace lead the line for his side in the big match, but stated after the match that he struggled to adjust to the position in which he was forced to challenge for the ball in the air.

Chelsea’s Andreas Christensen Vows to ‘Learn’ From Costly UEFA Champions League Mistake

?Chelsea youngster Andreas Christensen has spoken defiantly on his mistake in his side’s 1-1 draw with Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League; a mistake that handed the visitors an away goal to take back to the Nou Camp.

The Blues produced a solid performance, with Antonio Conte getting his tactics spot on against Spain’s best team, but they were undone by a Lionel Messi equaliser after Christensen overhit a pass across his own box, ?and came away with a slightly disappointing 1-1 draw.

Cesar Azpilicueta then misjudged the ensuing 50-50 with Andres Iniesta, who subsequently squared the ball back for the Argentine superstar to convert.

It was a real shame for the home side, who were defensively solid up until that point, and now Christensen has addressed his error.

He told TV3 Sport, as quoted by the ?Metro: “I had done all the hard work and kept the ball in play, but then I made a very bad decision, I should have kicked it out.

“As a centre-back, you get punished by your mistakes, however, it’s the position that I’ve chosen to play, so I won’t be dwelling too much on it and let it get to me.

“I know I made a mistake, but there is not much else to do than to learn from it and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

The Denmark international has seldom put a foot wrong this season since coming into the team at the expense of David Luiz, and he certainly hasn’t been short of support on social media platforms after his rare error on Tuesday.

Willian Admits He Is Still Friends With Former Boss Mourinho But Rules Out Reunion

Chelsea midfielder Willian has confessed that he remains friends with former boss Jose Mourinho, but insists he is focused on Chelsea and not reuniting with Mourinho at Old Trafford.

?“He is my friend. I had a great time with him, but I am at Chelsea and he is now at Manchester United,” said Willian (via ?Goal).

Chelsea FC & Sporting Lisbon Press Conference

Chelsea face tough trips to Manchester United and Manchester City before their return leg in Barcelona, but Willian has confidence in his side to do ‘a great job’.

“They are difficult games. It is totally different to play in the Premier League to the Champions League,” he said. “I think we can stay at this level and we can go to Old Trafford on Sunday and play another great game.

“We have to play in a similar way. Against Manchester United, I think we can do a great job.

“Against Manchester City, it will be like the game against Barcelona – they like to have the ball. We have to stay compact and use the same plan as we used against Barcelona. We can win these games. We will go there to try to win.”

FBL-EUR-C1-CHELSEA-ATLETICO

The Brazilian hopes Chelsea can replicate ?their impressive display from their 2-1 away victory over Atlético Madrid in group stages.

He continued: “Of course, it was a great game, we played very well, we had a plan to come into this game. We were unlucky because we made a mistake and then we suffered an away goal but I think the result is still open.

“We can try to go there and win the game. It will be a completely different game, to play there is different. But if we go with the same mentality as we did against Atletico, we can go there with great spirit and win the game.”
